Continuing an existing homeless services grant that is already serving people

Renewal Project (Renewal)

A renewal is for an existing eligible grant that is seeking continued funding. It is not the starting point for a brand-new organization or a brand-new project idea. Renewal applicants should be ready to show performance, compliance, spending, and outcomes from the current grant.

What problem does this solve?

Important housing and service projects need continued funding so participants are not disrupted. Renewal applications help the community keep effective existing projects operating.

This may be a good fit if...

  • Your organization already has an eligible grant that is due for renewal.
  • You can document performance, spending, match, monitoring, and compliance.
  • You can explain how the project benefits participants and the local system.
  • You are ready to participate in local review and ranking.

This may not be the best fit if...

  • You are proposing a brand-new project.
  • You do not currently hold an eligible grant.
  • You want to significantly change the project model without using the correct change pathway.
  • You cannot document current performance or compliance.

What would the program actually do?

  1. The existing project continues serving current and future participants.
  2. The recipient gathers performance, spending, match, monitoring, and outcome documentation.
  3. The project goes through local review and HUD renewal submission.
  4. If funded, the project continues without major interruption.

What can funding usually support?

  • Continued eligible costs from the existing project, such as rental assistance, leasing, supportive services, operations, HMIS, or administration as applicable.

What should you have ready?

  • Is your current grant eligible to renew?
  • Can you document outcomes, spending, match, and compliance?
  • Do you know what needs to stay the same and what changes require approval?
  • Can you explain how the renewal protects current participants and local capacity?
  • Are you prepared for local review and ranking?

Think this might fit?

Start with a Letter of Intent

If you are a current recipient with a project due for renewal, submit a Letter of Intent so the local team can include the renewal in the competition process.
